WE NOW HAVE CHILDRENS' AND TEEN eAUDIOBOOKS!

eAudiobooks are now available at the Petoskey District Library through OCLC NetLibrary!  Petoskey District Library cardholders now have anytime, anywhere access to more than 1,000 different eAudiobook titles.

New users will need to stop by the library and create an online account (see “Procedures” below). Once that is done:
  • eAudiobooks may be accessed from anywhere at any time.
  • Users may check out up to 10 eAudiobooks at a time.
  • Titles are automatically returned to the library at the end of the
checkout period, however, users will need to delete the files from
    their computer.
  • eAudiobooks can be downloaded or played on any desktop, laptop or
portable device that supports Windows Media Player version 9 and above.
  • Users can also transfer favorite titles to a wide range of portable
devices, including portable music players, portable media centers and
    more.
  • Most PC computers will play both WMA files and MP3 formatted files.
  • Some_ portable devices will play both types as well.
  • Ipods play ONLY mp3 files so if you have an Ipod or an mp3 specific
player, make sure you choose MP3 from the FORMAT pull down menu.
PROCEDURES:

First time users
This MUST be done from a library computer!

  1. Go to www.netlibrary.org

  2. Click ‘create a free account’ located in the upper right corner, above the PPL logo.  This will not show up if you are NOT on a library computer.

  3. Follow the instructions for creating an account.
NOTE: PPL staff has NO way of retrieving your login and password if
forgotten, so please pick something you can remember! (or, write it
down somewhere, use a password manager, etc.)

Returning users (this can be done anywhere as long as you have ALREADY created an account)
  1. Go to www.netlibrary.org

  2. Click ‘login’ located in the upper left corner – login using your self created username and password

  3. Click ‘eAudiobooks’ located in the ‘In our Collection’ box on the right side of the page.
  4. You may now search for the eAudiobook you want by author, title, keyword, subject, or narrator.
  5. You can, if you wish, narrow the search based on how long an eAudiobook you want:  less than 3 hours long, less than 6 hours long,
less than 12 hours long, or less than 18 hours long. Year is optional.  You may also choose from 3 languages: Spanish, English, or French.
  6.  When you have located the eAudiobook you want to check out, click ‘download this eAudiobook.

  7. If you are transferring the eAudiobook to a portable device you MUST choose the CD Quality download option.

  8. If you are transferring the eAudiobook for use strictly on your PC, you may choose which quality format you wish to download.

  9. You should then see this:  "The eAudiobook was checked out successfully"
and will automatically begin downloading in a few seconds.  If
it does not, you can download the eAudiobook manually.  Once the
download is complete open the file in your media player to acquire a
license to play the eAudiobook on your computer.

  10. Choose ‘Save’ if prompted with a Save/Open download box.

  11. The eAudiobook should then begin being saved on your PC. You should see
something along these lines as well:                  <book title here> <whether abridged or unabridged>             <author name>
This eAudiobook is checked out to you. (Time remaining:  XX Days XX
    Hours XX Minutes)

  12. This means you have been granted the ability to listen to this file for
the borrowing period. Unless the eAudiobook is renewed, it will cease
to function on your PC/portable device, although the file will still be
there. You must manually DELETE the file when you are done with it or it no longer plays.
  13. Listen and enjoy!

Okay, the file is on my PC, now what?

Double click on the audio file – your audioplayer software should start. To listen on your PC, just sit back and enjoy.

How do I get the eAudiobook from my PC to my portable device?

You should be able to get the eAudiobook to your portable device as you usually do. If this is new to you, here are some possible steps that might work (remember, sometimes different computers and programs are set up slightly different so this might not be exact for your situation, but should be fairly close).

1. Make sure you are using Windows Media Player.

2. Plug your portable device into the computer (usually by use of a USB port – like you would a memory key/thumb drive)

3. Once the PC has recognized the new hardware (your portable device), click ‘SYNC’

4. Click, drag, and drop the eAudiobook file to the right portion of the screen (if you cannot readily find the eAudiobook file in Windows Media Player, make sure it is located in the ‘my music’ folder on your hard drive, moving it there if necessary)

5. Click ‘start sync’

6. Let the computer do its thing and remember to safely disconnect your portable device when it is through.

You now have access to listen to this eAudiobook until the borrowing period is up.
