PAWS_Micky 003smallPAWS to READ- Micky

Micky and Jean WIlson will be available on the 1st Tuesday of the month.

All PAWS activities are held in the Children’s Room.

Readers earn a stamp on a record card for every 15 minutes that they read to one of our dogs. When he/she has earned 4 stamps, they will receive a “Pawsome Reader” tag to wear as a necklace or use as a zipper tag. If readers complete a second card, they a “Pawsome Reader” dog tag.

The theory is, that by reading out loud to the dog, who doesn’t judge how well the child reads, the child’s self consciousness disappears and she gains the confidence needed to become a better reader.

Another one!

Another one!

The Petoskey District Library periodically offers a program especially for babies and Moms (or other caregivers!) during the year The program runs much like a play group and will introduce rhymes, songs and books to babies and caregivers. Materials and activities will be drawn from the Public Library Association’s “Every Child Ready To Read” and the Association of Library Services to Children’s “Born to Read” programs. Each program will be about twenty – thirty minutes long and will have time for caregivers and babies to read a book together.

Registration is highly recommended but not necessary, though drop-ins will be welcomed provided that the class is not full. There is a limit of 10 care givers and their babies for each session. Call us at the number below, email us at the address below or stop by the Youth Services Desk in Children’s Room to sign up or get your questions answered.

2014 Fall Session:  Wednesdays, Sept 24 and October 1, 8 & 15

This free program will be implemented by Lisa Scholl (Ms Lisa), one of our Youth Services Librarians who has had training in the Every Child Ready to Read program of The Public Library Association (PLA), and the Born to Read” program from Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), both divisions of the American Library Association (ALA).

Please call the Children’s Services Department at 758-3112 or stop by the Youth Desk to sign-up or if you have any questions.

Elementary Reader’s Theatre (ERT) for grades 3-8 for the rest of the school year will meet from 5-5:50 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning February 11 through the end of May, in the Program Room.  Mr Jon Baughan will be the new mentor.

Reader’s theater is a legitimate form of drama with actors using their voices and upper bodies to convey various roles in a script through reading to an audience. It differs from a play in that parts or roles are read rather than memorized. Actors usually stand behind lecterns or music stands and use techniques such as vocal and facial expressions as well as hand and arm movements. Small hand props may be used as well.  And, It’s FUN!

Periodic public performances are presented, participation in these is optional.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Parent/Child LapSits and last about 30-45 minutes.  Parent or Caregivers need to bring the child and sit together to enjoy developmentally appropriate stories, songs (accompanied by banjo and ukulele); finger plays, flannel board presentations and a weekly visit from Puff the Magic Dragon. These programs are targeted at children 18 months to three years old.  Information about parenting, literacy and other family related subjects will be shared periodically during the program.

Due to the developmental needs of this age group, it is preferred that siblings do not attend if at all possible. However, nobody will be turned away if bringing a sibling is the only way for a child to attend. Bringing toys is also discouraged.  This is a “drop-in” program and no sign-up is required.
