The “Chess Gang” will meet from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Children’s Program Room and will be mentored by Mr. Robert Bemben & Robin Ray of Levering. Young people from 8-16 yrs may drop in at any time during the scheduled time and the activity is free. The emphasis will be on open chess play with some instruction, depending upon the needs of the participants (Older players will assist the younger ones). Players of all skill levels are welcome and are encouraged to bring chess sets from home if they have them. Adults interested in assisting should call Ron Fowler at the library, 231-758-3123.

Babies and Books, Fall Session
The Petoskey District Library periodically offers a program especially for babies and Moms (or other caregivers!) during the year The program runs much like a play group and will introduce rhymes, songs and books to babies and caregivers. Materials and activities will be drawn from the Public Library Association’s “Every Child Ready To Read” and the Association of Library Services to Children’s “Born to Read” programs. Each program will be about twenty – thirty minutes long and will have time for caregivers and babies to read a book together.
Registration is highly recommended but not necessary, though drop-ins will be welcomed provided that the class is not full. There is a limit of 10 care givers and their babies for each session. 2014 Fall Session: Wednesdays, Sept 24 and October 1, 8 & 15
This free program will be implemented by Lisa Scholl (Ms Lisa), one of our Youth Services Librarians who has had training in the Every Child Ready to Read program of The Public Library Association (PLA), and the Born to Read” program from Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), both divisions of the American Library Association (ALA).

Parent Child LapSit Story Time
Parent/Child LapSits and last about 30-45 minutes. Parent or Caregivers need to bring the child and sit together to enjoy developmentally appropriate stories, songs (accompanied by banjo and ukulele); finger plays, flannel board presentations and a weekly visit from Puff the Magic Dragon. These programs are targeted at children 18 months to three years old. Information about parenting, literacy and other family related subjects will be shared periodically during the program.
Due to the developmental needs of this age group, it is preferred that siblings do not attend if at all possible. However, nobody will be turned away if bringing a sibling is the only way for a child to attend. Bringing toys is also discouraged. This is a “drop-in” program and no sign-up is required.

Hobbies in the Lobby
- Our next Hobbies in the Lobby will feature Tiffany Lenau with a Laughter Yoga workshop. The event will take place in the Petoskey District Library labyrinth (weather permitting), or the lower level classroom at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3rd. For more information, click here.

Parent Child LapSit Story Time
Elementary Reader's Theatre
Elementary Reader’s Theatre (ERT) for grades 3-8 for the 2013/14 school year will meet from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Mondays, now through the end of May, in the Children’s Program Room.
Reader’s theater is a legitimate form of drama with actors using their voices and upper bodies to convey various roles in a script through reading to an audience. It differs from a play in that parts or roles are read rather than memorized. Actors usually stand behind lecterns or music stands and use techniques such as vocal and facial expressions as well as hand and arm movements. Small hand props may be used as well. And, It’s FUN!
Periodic public performances are presented, participation in these is optional.

Actors usually stand behind lecterns or music stands and use techniques such as vocal and facial expressions as well as hand and arm movements. Small hand props may be used as well.
Reader’s Theater builds reading confidence (and it’s fun), helps readers learn to read with expression (plus, it’s fun) and it promotes reading fluency (besides, it’s fun). While telling a familiar story in a creative way, participation in a Reader’s Theater group improves a child’s reading skill and comprehension, and develops vocal and facial expression in order to effectively convey thoughts and emotions (did we mention that it is fun?).
