Bins of Books Policies

The Petoskey District Library’s (PDL) Bins of Books Program was designed primarily for Day Care Providers, Teachers and Home Schoolers. Holders of a valid Petoskey District Library card, subject to the policies below, may check out a Bin. Because this is a special program, we need those of you who choose to take advantage of it to perform additional tasks that we do not require you to do for “regular” library materials. So, please carefully read, and follow, your part of the Policies and procedures outlined below. All participants also need to understand that the themes for each bin are not comprehensive (they were not assembled by a curriculum consultant), though we do have every confidence that each bin will offer its users a good start in the study of the given theme. Grade level indications should serve as a general guide only; you may wish to read the description for each Bin and look the contents over, before you check it out to be certain that it meets your needs. As always, previewing materials before using them with children is recommended!

  • You must posses a valid PDL card, however, cardholders from the neighboring libraries of Charlevoix, Boyne City, and Crooked Tree may be eligible for the program. Please ask at the desk.
  • Bins will not be used for interlibrary loan.
  • One Bin per card may be checked out at any given time.
  • Bins may be reserved.
  • The checkout period for the Bins will be 28 days (4 weeks).
  • There shall be a one-week grace period before fines will be assessed.
  • After that, fines will be assessed at the rate of $1.25 per day (this is very reasonable, considering how many items are in the average bin and that each item should, technically, be charged at the rate of 10¢ per item per day).
  • A Bin may be renewed, provided that there are no reserves placed on it.
  • A Bin may be renewed by phone (758-3111) provided that it is not currently overdue and there are no reserves placed on it. If it is overdue (beyond the checkout period of 28 days), it must be brought in, checked in (we expect that you will have checked the bin contents against the bin checklist – thus avoiding staff review of materials) and all fines paid before you may check it out again.
  • No special overdue notices will be sent; regular notices will be sent in accordance with our current procedure.
  • If bin materials are loaned to your children, students or families, the cardholder is financially responsible for any missing items.
  • Damage charges for all media (non-book items) will be pro-rated per current library policy for these items.
