Books Broaden the View

A new partnership between the Petoskey District Library (PDL) and the Emmet County Correctional Facility is bringing books to the inmates at the Emmet County Jail. PDL Librarian Lisa Scholl has worked in outreach services at PDL for 17 years, bringing library books currently to five Petoskey senior apartments and living facilities, and now she has added another stop to her list. Through a new book delivery program, inmates at the Emmet County jail can request, by mailed letter, delivery of two paperback books a month. The books, donated by the Friends of the Petoskey Public Library, are hand-selected by a librarian based on the inmates’ preferences.  “We are excited about this program. Reading books can offer inmates a productive way to use their time; it can be relaxing and educational. Reading and learning can take their minds to a new place, inspire them in their lives. We are thankful to the Friends of the Library for the donations of the books and hope the inmates will get a lot out of it”, said Scholl.
