PDL Awarded National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Grant

Petoskey District Library is one of 61 organizations nationwide selected to receive a 2021-2022 NEA Big Read grant. A grant of $5000 will support a community reading program focusing on An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo in March – May 2022. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

“We are thrilled to have received the NEA Big Read grant. This is a wonderful opportunity for PDL to explore and develop partnerships, grow literacy, strengthen community, and find new ways to bring people together after a challenging year” said PDL Programming Librarian Sarah Biskup.

“For 15 years the NEA Big Read has supported opportunities for communities to come together around a book, creating a shared experience that encourages openness and conversations around issues central to our lives,” said Ann Eilers, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “We congratulate Petoskey District Library for receiving an NEA Big Read grant and look forward to a wide variety of meaningful community events.”

The NEA Big Read offers a range of titles that reflect many different voices and perspectives, aiming to inspire conversation and discovery. PDL’s chosen Big Read is An American Sunrise is a collection of poems written by the first Native American Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo. Copies of the book will be available at PDL’s kick-off event in March 2022.

Also in 2022, PDL and their partners will offer a series of programs, including book discussions, lectures, art workshops, films, and more, all helping communities to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are today, and where we’re going. Project partners to date include Crooked Tree Arts Center, Good Hart Artist Residency, Harbor Springs Festival of the Book, Little Traverse Bay Bands Niigaandiwin Education Department, Little Traverse Literary Guild, and North Central Michigan College.
