Big changes are coming to one of Petoskey District Library’s (PDL) digital services. Since 2017, library patrons have explored a world of cinema using Kanopy, a video streaming service for quality, thoughtful entertainment. With a valid PDL card, patrons could access a diverse collection of over 30,000 films and use play credits to stream anytime and anywhere from desktop to smart TV, to mobile or tablet, up to 8 films per month. On average PDL patrons tally over 200 viewings each month!
This great service is not going anywhere, nor will any of the great content. What is changing on November 1 is the current play credit system. Now, instead of play credits, patrons will have a monthly ticket allotment of 24 tickets. Each ticket represents $1 in cost to the Library, and films range from 1 ticket for shorts of less than 30 minutes, to 4 tickets per play for major studio titles. Many titles are offered for 2 tickets. Episodic content will have a “cost” based on the total runtime of the entire season, for example, to binge a series, you might spend 5 tickets, but have 2-3 weeks to view that entire series. Every video will be clearly labeled with a ticket value and viewing window, so patrons will know how many tickets are required prior to viewing. As always, there will also be a collection of content that is absolutely free- no tickets required.
You can access Kanopy through a variety of devices and platforms, including Roku, Apple TV, iOS, and Android. Patrons will need a valid PDL card to access the collection. View a
