National Friends of Libraries Week may officially take place the third week of October, but the Petoskey District Library is extending the celebration all month long to honor its Friends of the Petoskey Public Library (FOPPL).
Festivities kick off with a pop-up information table in the library lobby on Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and continue with the much-anticipated return of the Friends’ signature fundraiser, “A Night at the Library,” on Thursday, Oct. 9.
Founded in 1995, the Friends of the Petoskey Public Library raise funds to support library programs, materials, and special projects. Their biggest ongoing fundraiser is the Friends’ Book Store, located in the library’s lower level, where gently used books are sold seven days a week—most for under $3. Volunteers stock and organize the shop and help run the annual Big Book Sale each July during Petoskey’s Downtown Sidewalk Sales. Friends volunteers also assist with events such as the Friends of the Carnegie lecture series, held every fourth Monday at 7 p.m. in the historic Carnegie Building.
“The Friends are an incredible asset to our library and our entire community,” said Library Director Val Meyerson. “Their dedication allows us to expand programming and services in ways that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.”
The highlight of the celebration is “A Night at the Library,” a lively after-hours gala from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9. This year’s theme, “The Other Side of the Story,” will feature live performances by local actors, including short skits inspired by beloved books such as Wicked, Salem Witch: The Fire & the Silence, and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. Guests can also enjoy literary monologues staged throughout the building, plus craft beverages and culinary treats from local vendors—all included in the $100 ticket price. Proceeds support library programming and materials. Tickets can be purchased online at petoskeylibrary.org or directly at the library.
National Friends of Libraries Week is coordinated by United for Libraries, a division of the American Library Association that supports library advocates, trustees, and fundraising groups across the country.
